Lighting tips Arrange proper lighting to get a clear and beautiful colour picture. • A realistic picture is composed of natural light and shade. • Fluorescent lights may produce flickering in pictures. Using the video light will help you produce good pictures without color blurs and flickering. How to direct the video light When the subject is lit from behind (backlighting) by other light sources, use the video light to illuminate the front part of the subject you want to shoot. Be sure not to directly shoot the sun with your video camera. Using the video light (See Fig. A) Be sure to set the POWER switch to OFF before attaching the battery pack. 1 Attach a fully charged battery pack to the video light as shown in the illustration. While pressing the battery pack against the video light, slide the battery pack in the direction of the arrow. 2 Turn the light attachment knob anticlockwise to loosen. 3 Attach the video light to the accessory shoe. When using the accessory shoe adaptor When attaching the video light to the accessory shoe adaptor, set the power switch of the video camera to OFF. HVL-20DM is not compatible with the accessory shoe adaptor . When using the accessory shoe adaptor, refer to the following instructions. 1 Attach the accessory shoe adaptor to the tripod receptacle of the video camera. Turn the knob of the accessory shoe adaptor in the direction of the arrow to tighten firmly. 2 Attach the video light to the accessory shoe adaptor. Make sure that the lighting section faces to the front and slide it firmly into the accessory shoe adaptor. You can turn the attached video light to the desired direction. Point the video light in the desired direction. Turn the lock knob in the direction of the arrow to tighten. Removing the video light 1 Set the power switch of the video light to OFF. 2 Loosen the lock knob and remove the video light from the accessory shoe adaptor by pressing the lock knob. 3 Remove the accessory shoe adaptor from the video camera. Notes • If you cannot insert the video light into the accessory shoe adaptor, turn the lock knob until it reaches the end and insert the video light again. • Mount the video light correctly, observing the direction of the arrow on the accessory shoe adaptor. 4 While pressing the small green button on the POWER switch, set it to .1 (10 W) or .2 (20 W). The video light will turn on. About Remaining Battery Indicator • This indicator shows the approximate remaining battery power. • The remaining battery time indication varies according to the type of battery pack. • The POWER switch blinks for about two seconds while the battery check is being performed when it is set to .1 or .2. (3 segments lit) About 70% or more (2 segments lit) About 70% to 30% (1 segment lit) About 30% to 5% (1 segment flashing) Almost 5% or less Note on the power source You cannot operate the video camera with the video light’s battery pack. Attach another battery pack to the video camera. Notes on the video light • With the NP-FM50 battery pack, you cannot use 2 bulbs. • If the remaining battery time becomes short, only one of two bulbs will light even when you use the NP-QM71D/QM91D battery pack for two bulbs. Removing the battery pack (See Fig. B) 1 Set the POWER switch to OFF. 2 While pressing the BATT button on the video light, slide out the battery pack in the direction of the arrow. Replacing the bulb (See Fig. C) Use a Sony XB-20DX halogen lamp (not supplied). 1 While pressing the top and bottom part of the video light, open the cover towards you. 2 Remove the used bulb holding it at the base then insert a new bulb. 3 Replace the cover. Cautions • Before opening the cover set the POWER switch to OFF and remove the battery pack. • The surface of the cover becomes hot when in use.
