Follow the gas supplier's instructions. • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department. C. Use only yourhand to push in orturn the gas control knob. Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or turn by hand, don't try to repair it, call a qualified service technician. Force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion. D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been underwater. Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been under water. LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS 1. STOP! Read the safety information above on this page. 2. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise to "OFF." Do not force. GAS CONTROL KNOB SHOWN IN “OFF” POSITION THERMOCOUPLE(LPG) THERMOCOUPLE(NAT) PILOT CONTROL KNOB INDICATOR 3. Wait ten (10) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP! Follow "B" in the safety information above. If you do not smell gas, go to the next step. 4. Find pilot - the pilot is located in front of the rear log. 5. Turn manual gas control knob counterclockwise to "PILOT." 6. Push in manual gas control knob all the way and hold in. Repeatedly push the piezo ignitor button until pilot is lit (or use a match to light). Continue to hold the control knob in for about one (1) minute after the pilot is lit. Release knob and it will pop back up. Pilot should remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 2 through 6. • If knob does not pop up when released, stop and immediately callyou service technician or gas supplier • If the pilot will not stay lit after several tries, turn the gas control knob to "OFF" and call your service technician or gas supplier. 7. Three heat settings can be selected by slightly depressing the manual gas control knob and turning the manual gas control knob counterclockwise to 1, 2 or 3. 8. CAUTION! WHen the manual gas control knob has been turned to desired heat setting, ensure that the manual gas control knob is locked into that heat setting and cannot be turned without being depressed. If the manual gas control knob is in mid-position, between heat settings, incomplete combustion will take place, causing odor and may produce gas leakage or carbon monoxide. TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE 1. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise to "OFF." Do not force. Page 20 23099-1-0707 23099-1-0707 Page 21 Figures 21 and 22 show a correct pilot flame pattern. The correct flame will be blue and will extend beyond the thermocouple. The flame will surround the thermocouple just below the tip. A slight yellow flame may occur where the pilot flame and main burner flame meet. Figures 23 and 24 show an incorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame is not touching the thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple to cool. When the thermocouple cools, the heater will shut down. THERMOPILE (VFDR ONLY) PILOT THERMOCOUPLE (NATURAL) THERMOCOUPLE (LPG) THERMOPILE (VFDR ONLY) PILOT THERMOCOUPLE (NATURAL) THERMOCOUPLE (LPG) PILOT FLAME CHARACTERISTICS PILOT FLAME CHARACTERISTICS Cleaning and Maintenance/Pilot Oxygen Depletion Sensor Pilot (Figures 25 and 26 ) When the pilot has a large yellow tip flame, clean the Oxygen Depletion Sensor as follows: 1. Clean the ODS pilot by loosening nut B from the pilot tubing. When this procedure is required, grasp nut A with an open end wrench. 2. Blow air pressure through the holes indicated by the arrows. This will blow out foreign materials such as dust, lint and spider webs. Tighten nut B also by grasping nut A. BA Figure 25 VFDR Figure 26 VFDT & VFDM CLEANING AND SERVICING Annual inspection and cleaning by your dealer or qualified service technician is recommended to prevent malfunction and/or sooting. TURN OFF HEATER AND ALLOW TO COOL BEFORE CLEANING. Remove logs, handling carefully by holding gently at each end. Gloves are recommended to prevent skin irritation from ceramic fibers. If skin becomes irritated, wash gently with soap and water. Refer to manual for correct log placement. PERIODIC CLEANING – Refer to parts diagram for location of items discussed below. • Do not use cleaning fluid to clean logs or any part of heater. • Logs -brush with soft bristle brush or vacuum with brush attachment. • Remove loose particles and dust from the burner, controls and grate. • Inspect and clean burner air intake hole. Remove lint or particles with brush. Failure to keep air intake hole clean will result in sooting and poor combustion.
