• Do not place the appliance on a hot surface. • Ensure that the appliance is placed (or wall-mounted) in a perfectly horizontal position: only then the two cups will become equally filled (fig 6.b. • Remove the mains plug from the wall socket: - if problems occur during making coffee; - before cleaning the appliance. • Do not allow the mains cord to come into contact with hot surfaces. • Use the appliance out of children's reach. Prevent them from pulling the mains cord. • Never use the appliance if the mains plug, the mains cord or the appliance itself is damaged. Cord storage (fig. 1) You can keep excess mains cord rolled up around the back plate. Wall mounting (fig. 2) The appliance can be free standing or wall mounted. When wall mounted, allow ample space above the appliance for filling with water! The distance between the centres of the two drilling holes must be 6 cm (2.35"). (See the drilling template on the flap of the packaging.) Automatic switch-off The appliance switches off automatically. If the pilot light comes on when inserting the mains plug into the wall socket, just wait for the light to go out. After that, let the appliance cool down for three minutes before switching on. Before first use Operate the appliance twice before filling the filter with ground coffee. (See section "Making coffee".) Next, clean the removable items. (See section "Cleaning".) Cleaning • Always remove the plug from the mains outlet before cleaning the appliance. • Never immerse the appliance in water. You can clean it with a damp cloth. • The removable items (filter, filter holder, drip tray) can be washed in hot soapy water (or in a dishwasher). Rinse with clean hot water and dry. (See figs. 8a and 9.) Making coffee (figs. 3-8) • Fill the water tank with the required quantity of fresh cold water (fig. 3), using the cup(s) from which you are going to drink coffee. Ensure that the water level is no higher than the maximum marking (MAX) in the water tank. • Put the required quantity of ground coffee into the permanent filter (fig. 4a). Distribute the coffee evenly. Quantity of ground coffee (advice): • When you use large cups (e.g. the cups provided with the appliance), it is advisable to take one full (heaped) measuring spoonful of ground coffee for each cup. • When you use smaller cups, it is advisable to take one level (flat) measuring spoonful of ground coffee for each cup. Use "Fast Filter" type coffee. If you grind the coffee yourself, do not grind it to a fine powder. You can adapt the quantity of coffee to your personal taste. - Alternatively, you can place a paper filter type 101 into the permanent filter and put the coffee into the paper filter (fig. 4b). Do not forget to fold the rims. • Place the filter holder into the appliance (fig. 5). • Position one or two cup(s) under the water outlet openings (figs. 6a and 6b). • Press the button to switch on (fig. 7). The pilot light comes on. • After the pilot light has gone out, wait for the last coffee to drip into the cup(s). Please note that the coffee is not kept warm! • If you have made coffee and wish to make some more rightaway, first empty and rinse the permanent filter (or throw away the paper filter with the used ground coffee) (figs. 8a and 8b). Allow about three minutes for the appliance to cool down. You may then fill the water tank again. Descaling Descale your appliance regularly. With normal use: hardness up to 18 °DH (22.5 °Clarke) - 2 or 3 times a year; hardness over 18 °DH (22.5 °Clarke) - 4 or 5 times a year. Your water supply company can inform you about the hardness of your water. - Operate the appliance two times as indicated in section "Making coffee". However, now use ordinary vinegar to fill the water tank and do not fill the permanent coffee filter with ground coffee. (You can use the same vinegar twice.) - After descaling, let the appliance work twice more with only water to rinse away the vinegar and scale remainders. - Wash the removable items. Replacing the mains cord If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must be replaced by the special cord. Apply to your Philips dealer or to the Philips organization in your country.
