Rest periods (When the microware energy cycles off) give time for the food to “equalize” or transfer heat to the inside of the food. An example of this is shown with power level 3-the defrost cycle. If microwave energy did not cycle off, the outside of the food would cook before the inside was defrosted. Here are some examples of uses for various power level: Power Level High / Default (100%) Best Uses Fish, Bacon, Vegetables, boiling liquids. Medium High (70-90%) Gentle cooking of meat and poultry; baking casseroles and reheating. Medium 5-6 (50-60%) Slow cooking and tenderizing such as stews and less tender cuts of meat. Low 3-4 (30-40%) Defrosting without cooking; simmering;; delicate sauces. Warm 1-2 (10-20%) Keeping food warm without overcooking; softening butter. 15 Operating Instructions Operating Instructions Defrost Guide SPEED DEFROST 1 Press SPEED DEFROST button. 2 Enter defrosting time using the Number pad. 3 Press START/STOP. • Allows you to defrost for the length of time you select. • Depending on the time entered, during the defrost program the oven may stop and beep 3 times. At this time, turn the food over and break apart or rearrange pieces for more even defrosting. Press START/STOP to resume the program. NOTE: During both SPEED DEFROST and DEFROST BY WEIGHT a dull thumping noise may be heard during defrosting. This sound is normal when the oven is not operating at High power. DEFROST BY WEIGHT 1 Press DEFROST BY WEIGHT button 2 Enter weight in pounds and ounces using the Number pad. 3 Press START/STOP. NOTE: For food weights more than 5 lbs 16 oz use SPEED DEFROST. Defrosting Tips • The defrost time is determined by the weight of the food. • The weight to be defrosted must be entered in pounds and ounces. Weights less then 10 oz must be preceded by two 0’s when entered (i.e. Press 0 twice then 5 for .5 oz). • During the defrost program the oven will stop and will beep 3 times. Turn food over and break apart or rearrange pieces for more even defrosting. Press START/STOP to resume the program. Conversion Guide If the weight of food is shown only in pounds, the pounds must be converted to ounces. Tightly closed packages should be slit, pierced or vented. AFTER food has partially been defrosted. Plastic storage containers should be at least partially uncovered. • Family-size, prepackaged frozen dinners can be defrosted and micro waved. If the food is in a foil container, transfer it to a microwave-safe dish. • Foods that spoil easily, such as milk, eggs, fish, stuffing, poultry and pork, should not be allowed to sit out for more than one hour after defrosting. Room temperature promotes the growth of harmful bacteria. • When defrosted, food should be cool and softened in all areas. If still slightly icy, return to the microwave very briefly, or let it stand a few minutes. 16 Operating Instructions Operating Instructions MENU COOKING Allows you to cook or reheat food automatically without entering a time or selecting a power level. In addition to selecting the amount of servings, some MENU COOKING programs give you the option of specifying between two portion sizes. These programs will show two different size pictures of the same item, the smaller of the two pictures will have one dot (•) signifying one press if you are cooking a smaller portion and the larger of the two pictures will have two dots(••) signifying a double press if you are cooking a larger portion. (Please refer to the menu cooking instructions on the following pages) BAKED POTATO 1. The Potato servings heats 3. The Beverage/Soup feature heats 1 to 4 servings of any beverage or soup. 2. Press BEVERAGE/SOUP once for 5 to 7 oz portions, press twice for 10 to 12 oz portions. 3. Select amount of serving.
