Computing tips . Save your work frequently. HINT: Some programs have an automatic save feature which you can turn on. This feature saves your file to the hard disk at preset intervals. See your software documentation for details. . Back up your files to storage media on a regular basis. Label the backup copies clearly and store them in a safe place. . Use Error-Checking and Disk Defragmenter regularly to conserve disk space and help your computer perform at its optimal level. Consult your Windows® XP operating system documentation for more information on these and other utilities. . Scan all new files for viruses. This precaution is especially important for files you receive via diskette, email, or download from the Internet. Take frequent breaks to avoid repetitive-motion injuries and eyestrain. . Do not turn off the computer if a drive indicator light indicates a drive is active. Turning off the computer while it is reading from or writing to a disk may damage the disk, the drive, or both. . Before turning off the computer, use the Turn off computer command or Standby command. See “Powering down the computer” on page 100 to learn more about Standby. The uppercase letter O and the number 0 are not interchangeable. . The Caps Lock key changes only the alphabet keys to upper case — the number and symbol keys are not affected. The caps lock light on the keyboard indicator panel illuminates when you press the Caps Lock key. Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys Ctrl, Fn and Alt keys The Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys do different things depending on the program you are using. For more information, see your program documentation. Function keys The function keys (not to be confused with the Fn key) are the 12 keys at the top of the keyboard. Function keys F1 through F12 are called function keys because they run programmed functions when you press them. Used in combination with the Fn key, function keys marked with icons run specific functions on the computer. Windows® special keys Windows® special keys The keyboard provides two keys that have special functions in the operating system: . The Windows® logo key opens the Start menu. . The Application key has the same function as the secondary TouchPad control button (or secondary mouse button). Overlay keys Keyboard overlay keys The keys with numbers and symbols on the front of them form the numeric and cursor overlay. This overlay lets you enter numeric data or con...
