For instructions on how to use the TPM, see Using Trusted Platform Module (TPM) (page 116). To use fingerprint authentication with the TPM, your computer needs to be equipped with both a fingerprint sensor and the TPM. See the printed Specifications sheet to find whether your model is equipped with them. ! If you use fingerprint authentication with the TPM, it may take longer for you to log onto your system or you need to enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) when logging onto Windows depending on the settings. In addition, if you change the settings for the TPM or the TPM fails, you may not be able to use the fingerprint authentication functionality. Note that using fingerprint authentication with the TPM has such drawbacks. Before enabling the TPM To use fingerprint authentication along with the TPM, you need to install and initialize the TPM software and customize the settings yourself first. To initialize the TPM software, you need to log onto your computer as a user with administrator rights. 1 Click Start, All Programs, Protector Suite QL, and Control Center. The Fingerprint Control Center window appears. 2 Click Elevate administrative privilege for user. The window closes and reappears. 3 Click Settings and System Settings. The Protector Suite Settings window appears. 4 Click Reinitialize TPM on the TPM tab. The Advanced Security Initialization Wizard window appears. 5 Click Next. 6 Upon completion, click Finish. 113113nN Customizing Your VAIO Computer Customizing the TPM settings 1 Click Start, All Programs, Protector Suite QL, and Control Center. The Fingerprint Control Center window appears. 2 Click Fingerprints and Enroll or Edit Fingerprints. The Welcome window appears. 3 Click Next. 4 Enter the Windows password and click Next. 5 Click Next. The Enrollment window appears. 6 Click Next. The Advanced Security window appears. 7 Select the Enable Advanced Security for the current user check box. 8 Read the information about the type under Advanced Security type and select the desired type. 9 Set the backup password. ! You can skip this step. However, if you do not set the password, you may lose data when the TPM fails, and if you set the password, the security level is decreased. Be sure to keep it safe and private from other people. 10 After setting the password, click Next. The Finish window appears. 11 Click Finish. . You can log onto your user account just by swiping the finger with the enrolled fingerprint even if your computer is shared by multiple users. 115115nN Customizing Your VAIO Computer Erasing the Enrolled Fingerprints Before disposing of your computer or transferring it to a third person, it is strongly recommended you erase the fingerprint data enrolled on the fingerprint sensor after erasing the data stored on your hard disk. To erase the enrolled fingerprints 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Press the F2 key when the VAIO logo appears. The BIOS setup screen appears. If not, restart the computer and press the F2 key several times when the VAIO logo appears. 3 Press the < or , key to select Security to display the Security tab. 4 Press the m key to select Clear Fingerprint Data and press the Enter key. The fingerprint data enrolled on the fingerprint sensor is erased automatically after your system restarts. 116116nN Customizing Your VAIO Computer Using Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is embedded in selected models only and provides your computer with basic security functions. In combination with the TPM, you can encrypt and decrypt your data to strengthen computer security against inappropriate access.
