Important Considerations
Automatic version upgrade
Administrators can configure whether the Data Protector Express Domain should allow clients to
synchronize and update automatically with the version installed on the Data Protector Express
Backup Server (Data Protector Express machine that the catalog runs on). This can be done with
the Domain property Client upgrade options.
Firewall usage
As Data Protector Express is a network-based application, firewall usage might interfere with the
connections between the Data Protector Express service and Administrators. To enable network
communication, you must open port 3817 for the Data Protector Express service and Administrators.
Refer to your firewall documentation for information on performing this action.
USB devices in use
Unplugging a USB device which is in use by a job will not cause the job to fail. Rather, any objects
that have not been processed will be logged as not attempted and the job will be logged as
completed successfully. Once unplugged, the job cannot reuse that device until the job is run again,
even if the device is plugged back in immediately. However, if you start the job again, it will use
the device if it has been reconnected.
Upgrading USB devices
After upgrading from an environment that used dedicated USB devices on a regular basis, you
will most likely have to reconfigure your jobs. The newly implemented method for managing USB
devices relies on a certain naming convention which most likely will not have been held with Data
Protector Express using the device prior to this release.
Using VSS with Data Protector Express Virtual Library
With the introduction of Microsoft Windows VSS support to Data Protector Express, special care
should be taken when configuring Data Protector Express Virtual Library storage pools to avoid
performance problems. Storage pools should be allocated to dedicated volumes. No files on those
volumes should be selected for backup. Otherwise the source volume and the target (disk used by
the Virtual Library) will be under snap-shot, while the backup is running. If you select an entire
machine for backup, you should deselect the volumes containing Virtual Library storage pools.
Removable device support
A removable device is one of the following types of devices:
•
Fixed volume that resides on a USB or FireWire interface, such as a portable USB disk drive
•
Removable volume, such as a USB flash drive
Removable devices are supported on Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms. When Data Protector
Express starts, or when a device is added or removed, Data Protector Express scans for devices
with which it can communicate. The removable device appears in the Data Protector Express
catalog, and you can use it like a tape device. However, it cannot be used as a disaster recovery
