Installation instructions
IMPORTANT:
VCEM 6.0 supports the Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) browser, but the underlying Virtual
Connect Manager does not currently provide the same level of support. Using IE8 to perform VCEM Domain
Maintenance tasks that access Virtual Connect Manager might result in failed or incomplete operations. HP
recommends Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) or Firefox 3.0 or 3.5 as the preferred browsers for use with
VCEM. For a list of browsers supported by Virtual Connect Manager, see the HP Virtual Connect for c-Class
BladeSystem User Guide.
When you are upgrading to a new and different CMS, or are moving from a 32-bit CMS to a 64-bit CMS,
you might need to migrate your data by using the HP SIM data migration tool. If you are upgrading to a
new version of VCEM on the same CMS, data migration with the HP SIM data migration tool is not necessary.

To install from the Insight Software DVD, select Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager 6.0.

Follow the on-screen instructions.
IMPORTANT:
HP recommends that you install and upgrade VCEM using the HP Insight Software DVDs. If
you manually upgrade HP SIM 5.2 or 5.3 to 6.0, you must also upgrade VCEM 1.10, 1.10 SP1, 1.20, or
1.30 to VCEM 6.0. Otherwise, VCEM will not work with the new HP SIM 6.0.
HP recommends the following steps be taken to ensure a successful VCEM installation.
•
To reduce the time required to perform a successful VCEM installation, before starting the installation,
complete the VCEM checklist available in the HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager User Guide.
•
For information about installation procedures and performing post-installation configuration tasks, see
the "Installing and Configuring VCEM" chapter of the HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager User
Guide.
•
VCEM 6.0 leverages HP SIM 6.0 technologies such as discovery, event handling, and the HP SIM
database. These technologies are installed alongside HP Insight Software. There are many references
to HP SIM technologies in the VCEM product, such as database backup and restore, the HP SIM desktop
shortcut, and the event handling mechanism.
•
Back up each VC Domain that is to be managed by VCEM.
•
Ensure that the Central Management Server (CMS) is correctly registered in the DNS environment.
Make sure HP SIM can correctly discover the CMS. You might experience an unauthorized error when
trying to access the VCEM home page if the CMS is incorrectly registered in the DNS.
To resolve this issue, register the CMS in DNS or add the CMS hostname to the Windows hosts file.
NOTE:
Do not install VCEM into an enclosure managed by VCEM. The overall VCEM operation can be
disrupted if a VCEM server blade is moved. One single instance of VCEM is required to manage VC Domains.
Communication between multiple VCEMs and one VC Domain causes a connection failure.
Uninstallation instructions
WARNING!
Uninstalling VCEM could have significant implications. Before uninstalling VCEM, verify that
no other upper level management products such as HP Insight Dynamics - VSE are using VCEM capabilities.
Uninstallation of VCEM requires a release of all VC Domains. Uninstallation of VCEM also removes all
VCEM-centric historical tracking of individual WWNs and MAC addresses.
To perform a VCEM uninstall:
1.
Before uninstalling, you must remove all the VC Domain Groups from the VCEM user interface. The
VCEM uninstall fails if there are any VC Domains still managed by VCEM.
2.
Select Start→All Programs→Insight Control Management→Uninstall Insight Control Management.
