Overview
The device special file (DSF) names for USB human interface devices (HID) on HP-UX 11iv3
changed with the release of PHKL_37815. USB HID devices include keyboards and mice.
Rationale
In versions of the USB driver prior to PHKL_37815, the DSF for a USB could change while the
system was booted if another USB device was attached or removed. With PHKL_37815, DSFs will
remain consistent as long as the system is booted. Also, DSFs will remain consistent across boots
as long as no devices are attached or removed.
Previous Formats
Original Driver (only available on 11iv3 if the user explicitly removes USB-00):
With the original version of the HP-UX USB driver (before USB-00), HID device special files are of
the following format:
/dev/hid/mouse_nnn
/dev/hid/keyboard_nnn
Note that nnn is the three digit instance number for the device.
USB-00 Driver:
In USB-00 version C, HID DSFs are of the following format:
/dev/deviceFileSystem/Usb/Keyboard/keyboard@
/dev/deviceFileSystem/Usb/Mouse/mouse@
Where is generated using the device's worldwide ID.
The USB-OO driver also provides two multiplexed DSFs. These special files allow the user to read
all the input from all USB keyboards or mice attached to the system through one file, thus
multiplexing the input from several devices into one DSF. These files are named:
/dev/deviceFileSystem/keyboardMux
/dev/deviceFileSystem/mouseMux
New Driver on 11iv2 (PHKL_37814):
The new driver on 11iv2 (as delivered by PHKL_37814) uses the conventions of the “original driver”
above. It also:
1)
creates keyboard and boot protocol mouse multiplexed device special files
(/dev/hid/kbdmux and /dev/hid/mousemux). Again, these DSFs allow the user
to read all the input from all USB keyboards or mice attached to the system
through one file.
2)
creates symbolic links from the USB-00 multiplexed DSFs to /dev/hid/kbdmux
and /dev/hid/mousemux to maintain compatibility.
New Format in 11iv3
With PHKL_37815 and subsequent patches, all HID devices are named as follows:
/dev/hid/hid_nnn
