Quick and Pain-free Expansion
With FlexPort Technology, adding storage network capacity is quick and easy. Without the time-consuming
hassle of purchasing and installing additional equipment, you can respond to changing needs on the spot.
Adding port connectivity is simple and non-disruptive¹ to the operation of the switch.
It’s as easy as 1, 2, and 3.
1. Simply order the HP StorageWorks Edge Switch 2/32 Upgrade kit (sold in 8-port increments)
2. Install the pluggable optics and cables.
3. Activate the ports by entering the provided license key in the switch management application. The
newly added ports will configure automatically. Your additional capacity is online and ready to go!
More Durable and Efficient SANs
By using FlexPort Technology, you reap the benefits of using larger switches without paying for un-used
capacity. A fundamental rule in SAN design is to start with the right building block—one that minimizes the
need for inter-switch links (ISLs). A fifty port meshed fabric built on numerous 8-port switches costs more to
own, delivers a lower performance, offers less-than-desirable availability and is more difficult to manage
than a similar sized fabric built on larger 16- or 32-port switches. When switches are connected together
to form a fabric, some ports become consumed by ISL connections, leaving fewer available ports for device
connections. The ratio of usable ports to purchased ports then declines, driving up costs. In addition, ISLs
can lead to performance bottlenecks, which are magnified as network traffic increases and the network
structure grows. Fabrics built with fewer switches produces a lower cost and simpler more robust network
that is easier to manage —lowering the overall total cost of ownership.
Implementing FlexPort Technology
FlexPort Technology is easy to order, configure, and activate.
Initial hp StorageWorks edge switch 2/32 Order:
When initially ordering your switch, request the FlexPort feature (currently available in the HP
StorageWorks Edge switch 2/32). The reseller will provide you with the appropriate order numbers,
allowing you to specify the number of ports to be initially active (16, 24, or 32 ports). Upon switch
installation, only the ports ordered will be active. The yet-to-be-purchased ports will lack optical transceivers
and are inoperable until activated though a FlexPort Upgrade Kit. The management application describes
these ports as blocked and inactive to avoid confusion with active ports.
Adding Port Connectivity After Switch Is Installed:
To add ports, order A7290A or 302660-B21 Upgrade Kit through an authorized HP reseller. Each kit
provides the necessary optical transceivers and software key to enable eight additional ports. Upon
receiving the kit, simply plug in the optics and follow the install GUI for entering the FlexPort activation key.
The switch automatically reconfigures itself, activating the eight or sixteen additional ports. The switch will
be offline while the update occurs¹.
