Caution! For vehicles in which the cigar lighter resp. onboard power sockets also function with a switched-off vehicle ignition: Only use the Rapid Battery Charger with the engine running. Otherwise, the vehicle battery could be completely discharged by the use of the Rapid Battery Charger! - 16 Charging batteries Danger! Charge exclusively rapid rechargable batteries of the types "Ni-Cd" and "Ni-MH". NEVER recharge batteries of other types or non-rechargable batteries. These are not suitable for recharging. This could irreparably damage the Rapid Battery Charger and the inserted batteries. Due to the charging current, only batteries with appropriate capacities may be charged: Ni-MH batteries: -AA min. 1750 mAh/max. 2700 mAh -AAA min. 750 mAh/max. 1000 mAh Ni-Cd batteries: -AA min. 700 mAh/max. 1000 mAh -AAA min. 300 mAh/max. 600 mAh Should an attempt be made to charge batteries with significantly lower capacities, the batteries could be destroyed. There is also the danger of a fire as well as an explosion! - 17 • Place the selector switch e into the position Ni-MH if you want to charge Ni-MH batteries. • Place the selector switch e into the position Ni-Cd if you want to charge Ni-Cd batteries. • Insert the batteries into the charging slots t. Note: This appliance is equipped with an individual shaft monitor, which allows it to charge 1 to 4 batteries of differing sizes (AA or AAA), capacity or charge condition. Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries must not be loaded simultaneously. Ensure that the batteries are inserted into the charging slots in accordance with their polarities. Otherwise, the batteries will not be charged. • The charging process now begins. The Rapid Battery Charger has a control lamp w for each cell in the charging slots t. The control lamps w show the charging condition of the individual batteries. - 18 The various displays have the following meanings: • The control lamp w blinks red: -Defective batteries or non-rechargeable batteries have been identified. Remove the inserted batteries from the Rapid Battery Charger. • The control lamp w does not glow: -The batteries have not been inserted correctly into the charging slots t. • The control lamp w is permanently red: - The batteries are being charged. • The control lamp w is permanently green: - The batteries are charged and the appliance has switched to "retention charging". Warning! The batteries will become hot during charging. NEVER touch hot batteries! There is a danger of being burnt! - 19 • Unplug the AC adapter y from the mains power socket or the car adapter u from the cigar lighter socket and allow the batteries to cool down. Afterwards you can remove the charged batteries from the Rapid Battery Charger. Average charging times Depending on the type, age and remaining charge in the batteries, the charging process can take various lengths of time. The average charging time can be taken from the following table. Take note however that the times given are only guiding values. Type Typ AA Capacity Ni-MH Ni-Cd 2300 mAh 110 min. --700 mAh --90 min. - 20 Type Typ AAA Capacity Ni-MH Ni-Cd 900 mAh 100 min. --300 mAh --90 min. Timer Control In addition, this battery charger has a timer control which, after 2 hours, automatically switches it over to the maintenance charge. This serves as an additional protection against overcharging should the charge completion identifier not react, possibly due to a defective battery. - 21 Charging the USB device Warning! Check to ensure that the current consumption of the USB device is not higher than 500 mA. Further information is provided in the operating manual of your USB device. • Insert the USB connector of the USB device into the USB port r of the charger. • If necessary, switch the USB device on. Notice: You can simultaneously charge batteries in the charging slots t and a USB device at the USB port r. - 22 Troubleshooting The Rapid Battery Charger displays nofunctions With mains power operation: • Check to see if the low-tension plug on the cable of the power adapter y is correctly inserted into the power adapter connection q. • Check to see if the power socket into which the power adapter y has been inserted is "live". To do this, connect a different, functioning electrical appliance to the socket. With operation over the vehicle-adapter: • Check to see if the vehicle-adapter u is correctly connected to the Rapid Battery Charger and the cigar-lighter socket. • It is possible that the cigar-lighter only functions with a switched-on vehicle ignition. If you are unsure, consult the vehicle handbook. - 23 The inserted batteries are not beingcharged: • Check that the batteries are being inserted in accord with their polarity. • Check to see if you have inserted batteries suitable for charging into the Rapid Battery Charger. Exclusively suitable for recharging are Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries with the sizes AA/Mignon and AAA/Micro and designated as suitable for rapid charging. • Remove the power cable from the po...
